The first season of Netflix’s South Korean drama Squid Game showed 456 contestants who fought to their death to win a cash prize in order to pay off their debts.
After three years of waiting, fans could finally watch season two of the franchise, released 26th December.
Gi-hun won the first season of Squid Game, and season two follows him as he tries to lead hundreds of new competitors to safety. Similar to the first season, the show still focuses on themes such as wealth, greed, and the exploitation of those who are less fortunate than the rich, with a particular focus on the corrupt healthcare system that is the reason behind many of the new competitors wanting to take part.
Gi-hun is determined to use his new found wealth from three years ago to destroy the games, and viewers see him in episode two preparing to storm the island. He is seen pleading with the Front Man (overseer of the Squid Game) to put an end to these games – his request, of course, is denied.
Gi-hun’s plans to end the games are seemingly thwarted once more when his friend Park Jung-bae is shot by the Front Man just as they reach the control room. With the Front Man asking Gi-hun: “Player 456, did you have fun playing the hero? Look at the consequences of your little hero game.”
The first few episodes of the new season keeps the viewers away from the island to look at life in the outside world. Perhaps a way to show the levels of greed and corruption that exists off the island. Season 2 is only seven episodes long, whereas season 1 had nine.
Show creators have left the ending on a massive cliff hanger, and fans had a lot to say.
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), @selegendipity wrote: “thank god squid game has a season 3 cause wtf was that ending”, @IamJrdn23 added: “No way squid game season 2 was just seven episodes and then ended like that.”
@aiyanajadee continued: “Spent all day watching new Squid Game and now I’m absolutely fuming at the ending”.
Will there be a season three of Squid Game? When? Although fans have had to wait three years between the first and second season, showrunners have already confirmed that Squid Game three will arrive in 2025.
With the last two seasons having aired around autumn or winter time, we can assume that the third season will drop at a similar time next year.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed: “I actually wrote and shot seasons two and three in order at the same time”, before adding: “We’re going to do our very best to make sure we get season three done as soon as possible so that it can be shown to the viewers”.
What will season three of Squid Game be about? The plot is currently unconfirmed, but Hwang Dong-hyuk has teased that it will look at the consequences of Gi-hun’s actions.
Season 2 of Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
